$50,000 Urban Tree Grant for Street Planting
Free state money for trees: the city won a $50,000 Chesapeake Bay Trust grant to plant about 130 street trees this fall, matching with up to $27,500 of stormwater funds.
Forest conservation ordinance update
Maryland overhauled its Forest Conservation Act, shifting from 'no net forest loss' to 'net gain' and requiring one-for-one tree replacement when forests are cleared for development. The city must adopt a matching ordinance by July 1, 2026 to stay in compliance.
Bay Restoration Fund Grant
The city collects a quarterly 'Bay fee' from customers and gets a slice back through this state grant — expected to top $300,000 this year — to offset wastewater treatment upgrades. Aleshire used the discussion to critique how the state program has shifted toward loans and costly septic mandates.
Hamilton Run stream restoration
A decade-in-the-making restoration of Hamilton Run near Northern Avenue and Mills Park is finally moving forward with up to $1 million in new state-backed funding; it will also address Northern Avenue flooding.
